Douglas & Irene Lewis papers

Includes correspondence; paper re Irene Lewis; the Family Story of Irene Doreen Lewis; paper re Douglas Lewis; and papers relating to Douglas Lewis’ military service.

Irene and Douglas Lewis met at a birthday party in Bristol in November 1942. Irene, born in Llanybyther, Carmarthenshire in 1919, was teaching at the Cadbury Heath School and volunteering with the ARP. Doug, born in Wolverhampton in 1918 but living in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was stationed there as a Sargent with the US Army. The two began courting and later married on 12 December 1944 in Lampeter, shortly before Doug was transferred to Antwerp with the army. Most of the letters in the collection are between Irene and Doug from the period of 1943 until Irene left Abernant and sailed to join Doug in America in 1946. They lived in Indiana, had two children together and remained married until Irene’s death in 2012; Doug would pass away later in 2019.
