Administrative / Biographical History

The County Court system was set up in 1846 to deal with the majority of civil cases such as divorce and property law and also includes the small claims court. The Courts, of which there are over 230 in England and Wales, are presided over by a District Judge, advised by a court clerk. Newport County Court is one of four such courts serving the former county of Gwent.
