Brown, Janson & Company records

Records of Brown, Janson & Company relating to the operation of the bank, and its amalgamation with Lloyds Bank, including:

• Establishment (1891): partnership agreement;
• Operation (1844-1900): private ledgers, salary books, signature book, order books;
• Amalgamation (1900): related correspondence;
• General (1789-1947): baptism certificates of Janson family, manuscript history of firm.

This private bank was established in Threadneedle Street in the City of London, in 1813, as Nicholson, Janson & Co. Its partners were Yorkshire woollen merchants who simultaneously established a bank in Leeds, called Nicholson, Brown & Co. The London business moved to Abchurch Lane in 1815. Following partnership changes, it was renamed Brown, Janson & Co in 1823. Lloyds Bank took over the firm in 1900.
