Includes correpondence, evidence to the Commission, records of meetings, interim report (and drafts), progress reports to Commonwealth Secretariat, report and drafts. Also includes papers relating to antecedents of the Commission, including papers of Cumberland Lodge meeting relating to proposed Commonwealth Issues Research Network (1991). Some post-Commission papers including Association for Commonwealth Studies correspondence, draft constitution.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Commission on Commonwealth Studies was set up in June 1995 to report on the state of Commonwealth Studies in higher education around the Commonwealth and to suggest means of strengthening Commonwealth Studies if necessary. The Commission was appointed by the Commonwealth Secretary-General. It was chaired by Professor Thomas Symons and comprised eight other members, including the Secretary, Peter Williams. The Commission's report, "Learning from each other: Commonwealth Studies for the 21st Century", was published in June 1996.
