Administrative / Biographical History

Civil parish councils were created following the Local Government Act 1894 to carry out civil administrative functions, previously undertaken mainly by Vestry meetings of the (eccelesiatical) parish council and other bodies, which came to include rating, local amenities, and commenting on planning applications. In 1974, parish councils were abolished, and replaced by community councils.
