Administrative / Biographical History

Alfred Percy Smith was born in 1890. He attended King Edward School in Birmingham and was living at Kingston Lodge, Middleton Hall Road, Kings Norton at the time of his enrollment at the University of Birmingham to study medicine. His student record card indicates that he matriculated in September 1908 and was initially studying on a combined Science and Medicine course. He was an external candidate for the 1908-1908 academic session, studying physics, chemistry and biology as well as anatomy, dissections and physiology in the Medical Faculty. He continued studying courses in botany in the Science Faculty during later years of his medical degree, but was also studying anthropology, pathology, materia medica and pharmacy, surgery, medicine, public health, forensic medicine, midwifery, therapeutic, mental diseases, infectious diseases, diseases of women, operative surgery and ophthalmology. He took his final MB ChB examination in September 1914. During his time at University he was successful in the annual sports day, gaining first place in high jump in 1912 and 1913. He was awarded MB ChB in 1915 and a BSc in 1916. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War, and attained the rank of Captain. He was killed at Suvla Bay in 1916
