Bagillt is a small town and community overlooking the Dee Estuary, near Holywell in Flintshire. Flint had a thriving export trade of coal to Ireland. There were several profitable coal shafts worked in the town and its environs. The coal was conveyed to the docks in carts, and panniers on the backs of horses and donkeys and later on trucks running on tramlines. It is believed there was a lead smelting works in Flint for about six hundred years. Most of the lead smelted in Flintshire during the 17th century was sent by sea to London where some of it was re-exported to the continent. This explains why the works was located next to the Dee Estuary with a small dock.
