Papers and correspondence of Walter Stiles, 1886-1966

This small group of papers includes careful notes taken by Stiles at Cambridge, 1906-1909, especially lectures by R.H. Biffen and H.M. Ward. There are also photographs of Stiles with collaborators and colleagues, such as I. Jørgensen and F. Kidd.

Stiles was born in Hammersmith, London and educated at local schools and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, obtaining first class honours in the Natural Sciences Tripos Parts I and II, 1907-1909. He was Assistant Lecturer at Leeds University, 1910-1919, Professor of Botany at Reading University, 1919-1929, and Mason Professor of Botany, Birmingham University, 1929-1951 (Dean of the Faculty of Science, 1932-1935). His principal research interests were permeability, trace elements and nutrition deficiency in plants. He was elected FRS in 1928.

Received for cataloguing in 1976 by the Contemporary Scientific Archives Centre from Miss Ruth Stiles and Dr Walter Stiles, daughter and son. Deposited in the University of Birmingham Library in 1978.
