Administrative / Biographical History
This private bank was established in Dorchester in 1786 by Robert Albion Cox and Henry Mander. In 1790, on the death of Cox, a new partnership was formed and the firm became known as Williams, Cox & Co. Branches were opened in Swanage (1825), Lyme Regis (1833), Wareham (c.1833), Axminster (1834), Weymouth (1835), Sturminster Newton (1836), Seaton (1868), Bournemouth (1884) and Boscombe (1890). In 1878 the business was renamed R & R Williams, Thornton, Sykes & Co., following further partnership changes. It was also known as the Dorsetshire Bank. It was taken over by the Wilts & Dorset Banking Company (est. 1835) in 1897.
