B.A. St John's College, 1963. Lectured in modern history at UCL from 1966-80, when he moved to the University of Cambridge, becoming Professor of Modern History from 1991 to 2004. Fellow of St John's from 1980 to 2000. He was elected Master of Trinity Hall in 2000, serving in that role until 2004. He researched and published on twentieth-century political history, and served on the editorial board of several major historical journals.
