Extent:14 vols and 3 boxes, manuscript, typescript, and printed. 11 of the vols are finely bound in red with leather spines embossed with gilt lettering and with marbling on all inside covers and endpapers. The other 3 vols are bound in dark green leather with gilt lettering respectively as follows: (1) AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIR WALTER SCOTT. 1814-1830; (2) WILKIE'S PICTURE OF SCOTT AND HIS FAMILY: MSS; (3) SIR WALTER SCOTT'S MONUMENT EDINBURGH. MELVILLE PAPERS. The autograph letters from most of these vols have been removed, conserved, and placed in envelopes within archive boxes separate from their original vols, which now mainly contain only transcriptions
