The book itself is bound in damaged leather with some blind tooling on the outside covers and spine. At the end, the verso of the last flyleaf bears several signatures of Joseph Sparrow; also of J. (440 pp.), manuscript, together with an issue of The Intelligencer, number 288, covering the period 'from Munday, the 29th of Janu., till Munday, the 5th of Feb., 1648 [i.e. 1649]', the latter being printed material held in a separate envelope. Written in the careful, mixed hand of a professional amanuensis, with corrections and revisions, many in the predominantly italic, rounded hand of Charles Fairfax. Eight blank pages at the end have been filled at a later date by another hand with 'An account of my Lord Fairfax Ingagmts faithfully transcribed out of a Manuscript taken out of the Originall written by his owne hand found in his study after his decease'. The volume is held in a box. Bound in contemporary calf with some blind tooling on the outside covers and spine. Written mainly in a single hand, probably that of Eliza Marriott, but there are also at least two other hands found in the manuscript. Ff.92v-170v are blank. The remaining text on ff.171-178 is written in one of the different hands from the other end of the volume, upsidedown in relation to the main text, and was probably added last, after 1803. Bound in boards which have worn marbling on the outside and with a slightly damaged leather spine. There is an armorial bookplate of the Marriott family pasted on to the inside front cover, and the signature of 'Eliza Marriott, Darfield, 1763' is written on the top of the facing flyleafLanguage:EnglishShow on map
