Gilt stamped border constructed concentrically from outer to inner with a toothed ornament, a beaded ornament and then a foliate ornament. Corner ornamentation constructed from gilt stamps of circular and acorn ornaments in an arc, with a foliate ornament at the corner and a parallel floral ornament on the panel. The central ornament constructed from concentric circles (inner to out) of gilt circular and acorn stamps, with floral ornaments above and below, and a star with heart shaped ornaments at the centre. Remains of two ties on each cover, red silk. Spine has remnants of gilt border at top and bottom, and a star shaped formation of gilt ornament to its centre. Remains of a circular paper stamp bearing the shelf mark (possibly “A.20”) towards the top of the spine. Impression of 12? bands on spine. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Binding dimensions: 350 x 241 mm. Decoration / illustration: Front pastedown: pen and pencil drawing of an anatomical dissection taking place in the anatomical theatre at the University of Leiden. An almost exact copy of a 1616 engraving of Pieter Paaw (1564-1617) lecturing, by Andries Stock after a drawing by Jacob de Gheyn II (see website of the Art Institute of Chicago for reproduction of engraving: http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/51094), although many of the audience have had mortarboards substituted for other headgear. Fols 1v-2r: double spread pencil drawing depicting the two skeletons in situ in the Laudian Library of St John’s. Both mounted on pedestals with folding screens, and holding scrolls, either side of the doorway in which is inserted the dedicatory inscription.
