Letters - originals, drafts and copies - and fair copies of Skene's writings are generally in good condition and easy to read and handle. His botanical and other scientific notes, however, are usually scribbled in Latin on scraps of paper, on the backs of letters, or on the backs of printed forms of the Commissioners for Sick and Wounded Seamen.
