    Extent:Support (paper) 331 x 223 mm. Text area ca. 300 x ca. 150 mm. Fol. i 70 leaves as foliated in top right corner of rectos (foliation dated 1989). Abandoned pagination from 2v to 5r (2-7). Binding: Contemporary 17th c. brown-stained goatskin over pasteboard. Boards decorated with gold-tooled border (double fillet with toothed ornament; fleurons as corner-ornaments) and panel (single fillet with toothed ornament). Spine decorated with border (single fillet with same). ‘22’ stamped in gilt at top of spine. Board edges tooled in gilt. Fixings for 2 book ties on both boards – remains of these trapped under edge of rear pastedown show navy blue silk. Lower board with inverted inscription in ink: “98 P[ais P...?]”, later 17th/18th c? Binding dimensions: 350 x 241 mm. Decoration / illustration: Front pastedown: pen and pencil drawing of an anatomical dissection taking place in the anatomical theatre at the University of Leiden. An almost exact copy of a 1616 engraving of Pieter Paaw (1564-1617) lecturing, by Andries Stock after a drawing by Jacob de Gheyn II (see website of the Art Institute of Chicago for reproduction of engraving: http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/51094), although many of the audience have had mortarboards substituted for other headgear. Fols 1v-2r: double spread pencil drawing depicting the two skeletons in situ in the Laudian Library of St John’s. Both mounted on pedestals with folding screens, and holding scrolls, either side of the doorway in which is inserted the dedicatory inscription. Fol. 21r: pencil drawn diagrams of joints, etc. Fols. 29v & 30v, right hand margins: pencil details of pins, fixings & mounts. Fols. 39-42: different elevations of the skull – pencil. Of particular note: fol. 39 – general frontal view, but with the teeth lettered, and an inset diagram of the ear bones; fol. 40 – interior of the skull, showing hinges and opening.
