Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Historical material relating to brass bands and banding started to be donated to the Music Section within Salford College of Technology in the mid-1980s. Roy Newsome had been appointed as Head of Band Studies in 1976, and he began to establish a brass band archive. Materials came from a variety of sources and the archive grew quite rapidly. Newsome further developed the archive after taking early retirement in 1989, being appointed a Visiting Research Fellow at the successor institution, the University of Salford’s School of Media, Music and Performance. He continued to manage the archive until his death in October 2011.
