The notebook includes a draft letter to the editors of Philosophical Magazine concerning "On the existence of an equivalent relation between heat and the ordinary forms of mechanical power"; these sheets have been cut from the volume and are now contained in a separate folder. There is a draft of the paper, "On the mechanical equivalent of heat", published as "New determination of the Mechanical Equivalent of Heat". Joule annotated the volume further in 1877, when he added remarks on corrections required to his experiments.
The volume also includes some notes from science journals.
