Framed, watercolour portrait by[unknown member of the Christian Brethren].
Text on the reverse states: ‘J.N.D. had an objection to being photographed, but consented to sit for a brother, an artist, who was in poor circumstances, with a view to helping him. Mr Henry Petter obtained the painting-having, it is believed, bought it from the Artist’s brother; and had it framed at Shapland and Petter’s. On Mr Henry Petter’s death it came into Mr Charles Petter’s possession; from whose widow I bought it in 1938.’
