Scope and Content

Recipe book containing domestic recipes (folios 1-54) and medical recipes (folios 54v-120). According to the annotations below, the volume belonged to Susan or Susannah Oxenden (d. 1669), whose family was associated with Wingham in Kent, and it later passed into the hands of the Brathwaite family of Warcop in Westmorland. Administrative / Biographical History

According to Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Peerage, 53rd edition (1891), Susan or Susannah Oxenden (d. 1669) was the daughter of Sir Henry Oxenden (1614-86), first baronet, of Wingham in Kent. She married Sir Richard Booth (1626-80), barrister and judge, Chief Justice of Ireland. According to Joseph Nicholson and Richard Burn, The History and Antiquities of the Counties of Westmorland and Cumberland (1777), their daughter Elizabeth (b. 1664), married Richard Brathwaite of Warcop, Westmorland.
