Data Enhancement
Linking
This page provides information on:
Linking to descriptions
All descriptions, including lower levels, can be referenced by a 'data' URL, which is a persistent identifier. This is given in the information bar and labelled 'Bookmark'. The web address that you see in the browser is a more opaque URL. It can be used to reference the description, but the bookmark link is shorter and more user-friendly. The bookmark link resolves to the opaque link.
Bookmark Link: https://archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk/data/gb986-lund
Resolves to: archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk/search/archives/b4e57791-a87c-3541-a29b-58bd8509c7d1
The user friendly links are created using the country code, the repository code and the reference for the actual collection or unit being described.
https://archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk/data/{countrycode}{repository code}{reference}
If you send us descriptions via an export, we can usually create the data URL, as long as we have the requisite parts and the reference is unique.
It is very important that all references at all levels of description are unique, in order to create unique URLs.
Linking between Hub descriptions
The Archives Hub uses the <archref> EAD tag to enable linking between EAD descriptions. We recommend using the 'data' URL for the link (see above).
The EAD looks like this:
<archref href="https://archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk/data/gb1840-dw/dw/02/16">material relating to Silly Spider</archref>
You may want to use this kind of link if you have a number of series that are all part of one collection, such as The Robert Graves Papers.
Linking within descriptions
The standard tag to use here is the <ref> tag.
Links to external locations
Use the <extref> tag along with 'href' to link to any external location:
<extref href="http://www.library.manchester.ac.uk">The University of Manchester Library</extref>
All descriptions have an information bar, and that includes the 'bookmark', which is a user friendly URL
