Administrative / Biographical History
Charles Gairdner was born in 1824. At the age of 38, the Union Bank of Scotland employed him in as joint manager, following his work with the Western Bank, first as liquidator, then as principal. He became sole general manager of the Union Bank in 1865 on the retiral of James Robertson, and remained in the position until his own retirement in 1895, during which time he was awarded an honorary LLD from Glasgow University. He was one of the foremost writers on banking theory in 19th Century Scotland. He died in 1899 at the age of 75.
