Mary Donald Gardener was born on 18 January 1928 . She was a science student at the University of Glasgow from 1945-1949 . In her first year, 1945-1946, she studied Chemistry, Botany and Natural Philosophy. The following year she took Chemistry (Double) and Physiology (Ordinary). In her third year she studied Chemistry, Biochemistry and Bacteriology and in her final year, 1948-1949, she took Biochemistry (Hons, Pure Science). Mary Gardener graduated Bsc in 1949 and went on to work as a chemist.
Archibald Ward Gardener was born on 22 June 1923 . He was a medical student at the University of Glasgow from 1940-1945 . In his first year, 1940-1941, he studied Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Anatomy. The following year he took Anatomy, and Physiology. In his third year he studied Surgery, Medicine and Pathology and in his fourth year, he took Public Health, Medicine, Midwifery and Clinical Surgery. In his final year, 1944-1945, Gardener studied Medicine, Surgery, Midwifery and Gynocology. He graduated MB ChB in 1945 .
