Administrative / Biographical History

John Smyly, the first son of William Smyly, a merchant, was born in Strabane, County Tyrone in present-day Northern Ireland, and attended the University of Glasgow in the 1780s. Although he did not graduate, he formally matriculated (registered) at the University in 1782 to study in Professor George Jardine 's Logic class, and also attended classes between 1783 and 1786 in Moral Philosophy, Government, and Composition (linguistics).
