Administrative / Biographical History
Manufacturers of maritime equipment and general onshore engines, Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland .
Mitchell Swire Ltd , Greenock, incorporated in 1969, was made up of two companies, Cowal Engineering Co Ltd , Greenock, and James Mitchell & Son Co Ltd . In 1973, Scott Lithgow Ltd , shipbuilders, Greenock, took over Mitchell Swire Ltd . Scott Lithgow's holding company renamed Mitchell Swire Ltd as Cowal Engineering Co Ltd and broke up James Mitchell & Son Co Ltd to form two companies, Inchgreen Engineering Co Ltd and Greenock Engineering Co Ltd .
Cowal Engineering Co Ltd developed with the transfer in 1975 of the manufacturer of the Newark stern gland propeller shaft seals from Newark Ferguson Ltd , Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, following the latter's take-over by Scott Lithgow Ltd .
In 1977, Cowal Engineering was nationalised as part of British Shipbuilders in the Scott Lithgow Group. In December 1979, Cowal Engineering Co Ltd was closed following the transfer by British Shipbuilders of the company's assets, business and labour force to J G Kincaid and Co Ltd , marine engineers, Greenock.
