Administrative / Biographical History

George Newlands is Professor Emeritus of Divinity in the University of Glasgow and has been an Honorary Professorial Research Fellow since 2008.

At the University of Glasgow he has also held the posts of Lecturer in Divinity, 1969-73, Professor of Divinity, 1986–2008, Dean of the Faculty of Divinity 1988-90, and Principal, Trinity College, Glasgow, 1991–97 and 2002–07.

Outwith Glasgow he has been Dean of the Faculty of Divinity and Head of Department, and previously a University Lecturer in Divinity in Cambridge, among many other academic appointments. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and of the Royal Society of Arts, an Honorary Fellow of New College, Edinburgh, and President of the Society for the Study of Theology (2013-2014.)

Newlands was educated at Edinburgh (MA 1st Cl. Classics (Vans Dunlop Scholar, 1963); BD 1st Cl. Eccles. Hist. (Cunningham Fellow, 1966); PhD 1970; DLitt 2005), Heidelberg and Cambridge (MA). He became an Ordained minister of the Church of Scotland in 1970, and priest of the Church of England in 1982. He is a past Convener of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland’s Panel on Doctrine, has served on the Doctrine Committees of the Church of England and the Scottish Episcopal Church, and was a founding member of Affirmation Scotland.

Newlands’ research interests are in modern systematic theology, Christology, emancipatory theology and the history of Christian thought. Recent publications are: Traces of Liberality (Peter Lang, 2005), Christ and Human Rights (Ashgate 2006), Faith and Human Rights (Fortress 2008) and Hospitable God (Ashgate 2010.)
