From about the same date William Hardie also had dealings with the SS Rebecca Co Ltd and with the owners of and/or investors in the business of at least two other ships, the Helena and the Lady Gertrude (registered in London in 1885/6 and owned by Craig Scott & Co ). In 1893 , William Hardie was auditor for the Burgh of Rothesay, Island of Bute, Scotland. By 1898 , expanding its interests in domestic and overseas investments, the firm was carrying on its business under the name of Hardie & Rowan (possibly, R Houston Rowan), chartered accountants and stockbrokers. Hardie & Rowan feature as secretaries ( 1908 ) and later honorary secretaries ( 1911 ) of the Greenock Chamber of Commerce & Manufactures , serving during the presidency of John George Kincaid, engineer and shipmaster of Greenock.
