Administrative / Biographical History

West of Scotland Taverns Ltd was a subsidiary company of J & R Tennent Ltd , brewers, Glasgow, Scotland , and was formed on 1 March 1955 when they took over 2 premises in Glasgow, one in Morrison Street and the other in Gallowgate. The company was incorporated on 12 March 1955  . At the October Licensing Court in the same year the company took over a further 9 establishments and by 1957 the number of licensed premises was 27.

In 1956 it was decided that the firm would benefit from bulk buying of whisky as previously each shop ordered this commodity individually. This was the beginning of the development of the wine and spirit aspect of the business. The first spirit store was situated in the safe in the office of J & R Tennent Ltd . Soon there were customers outwith West of Scotland Taverns Ltd and as the business itself was also growing steadily the spirit store was moved to a larger room within the Brewery, which was capable of taking 50 cases. At the end of 1956 the Wine and Spirit Department of West of Scotland Taverns was formed.

In 1957 the first purchase of Bertola Cream Sherry and of cigarettes took place and the spirit store moved yet again to a larger room under the beer store. From 1958 the operation grew with some rapidity with the result that the spirit store now moved to the old Maltings Building where it occupied three floors.

In 1962 the Wine and Spirit Department of West of Scotland Taverns was transferred to J & R Tennent Ltd who undertook all buying of wines, spirits and cigarettes from that date on and formed their own Wine and Spirit Department.

West of Scotland Taverns Ltd was re-registered in 1965. No more is known about the company's history other than it was dissolved on 24 August 1993.
