Administrative / Biographical History

The Argyle Brewery, Chambers Street, Edinburgh, Scotland, is reputed to have been established in 1710. Archibald Campbell, snr and jnr, ran the brewery during the nineteenth century. Archibald Campbell, Hope and King Ltd was registered as a limited liability company, firstly in August 1896, in order to acquire the business of brewers and maltsters at the Argyle Brewery; and then again in November 1896, to acquire the businesses of Messrs Hope & King, Glasgow, Scotland, wholesale wine and spirit merchants, exporters and whisky blenders, at a purchase price of GBP 214,092. The company acquired South Western Brewery Co Ltd, Newton Stewart, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, and 6 tied houses in 1925. It was acquired by Whitbread & Co Ltd, London, England, in 1967 and the Argyle Brewery ceased to brew in 1970.
