Hurst, Nelson & Company Ltd was a railway and tramway rolling stock manufacturing company based in Motherwell, Scotland. The company was established in 1880, and built many railway wagons, as well as trams for several local authorities.

In 1909, they were incorporated as a limited company to acquire a company of the same name who were registered in 1893. Among their specialties included railway carriages, wagons, electric cars and other types of railway or tramway rolling stock, motor omnibus and other road vehicles bodies, electric railway and tramway trucks, wheels, axles, and much more.

The company built the original trailer carriages for the Glasgow Subway, and a batch of 24 four-wheeled vehicles were supplied in 1898. These were similar in style to the cars supplied by the Oldbury Railway Carriage and Wagon Company for the opening of the cable hauled railway in 1896. Hurst, Nelson and Co displayed one of these at the Earl’s Court exhibition centre in London. As well as this, the company also supplied vehicles for the London Underground. In the summer of 1905, they delivered two battery-electronic locomotives, also used for the construction of the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway, and subsequently also for the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway. Hurst, Nelson and Co were also involved in the extensions and improvements made to the Metropolitan District Railway (which later became the District line of the London Underground) in the early 1900s, and the company provided 32 motor cars and 20 trailers in 1910. By 1914, the number of employees working for the company totalled 1,600.

In 1918, the company Wagon Repairs was founded in order to acquire the wagon-repairing business of various wagon-building firms, including Hurst, Nelson & Company Ltd.
