Administrative / Biographical History
By 1880 , the firm of Reid Bros was established in Glasgow, Scotland , as engineering and colliery furnishers. The company quickly established a foreign trade with branches in Johannesburg, South Africa , and Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, Australia. In 1901 , the firm was incorporated as Reid Bros (Glasgow) Ltd with registered offices in St Enoch Square, Glasgow and became a private limited liability company in 1907. The company had a share capital of £80,000 with Joseph Reid as chairman of the company and Joseph Reid jnr, James Melross Reid and John Ormiston Reid as directors.
The company had a number of subsidiary companies that handled its foreign trade. In 1889 , Reid Bros (Johannesburg) Ltd was incorporated to handle the South African export trade. This company became Reid Bros (South Africa) Ltd in 1918 and in turn operated a number of subsidiary companies across southern Africa, chiefly in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and South Africa. These South African companies were acquired by African Oxygen Ltd , Johannesburg, in 1969. In 1991 , Reid Bros (Glasgow) Ltd was dissolved.
