Administrative / Biographical History

Ian Borthwick Cowan was born in Dumfries, Scotland, on 16 April 1932, and educated at Dumfries Academy and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, graduating MA in 1954 and PhD in 1961. He was assistant lecturer in Scottish History at the University of Edinburgh from 1956 until 1959; lecturer in History at Newbattle Abbey College, Dalkeith, Scotland from 1959 until 1962; lecturer in Scottish History at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, from 1962 until 1970, and senior lecturer in Scottish History at the University of Glasgow from 1970 until 1990. His specialism was the Medieval Scottish Church and he lectured widely, both at home and overseas, on a variety of historical subjects, but most extensively on the subject of the Scottish Church, both before and after the Reformation. Ian Cowan died on 22 December 1990.
