Administrative / Biographical History
The Linen Thread Co Ltd was established to manufacture thread for use in the shoemaking and netting industries in 1898 following the amalgamation of The Barbour Flax Spinning Co, Paterson, New Jersey, USA, Barbour Brothers, New York, USA, The Marshall Thread Co, Newark, New Jersey, USA, W & J Knox Ltd, Kilbirnie, Renfrewshire, Finlayson, Bousefield & Co Ltd, Johnstone, Renfrewshire, and William Barbour & Sons Ltd, Hilden, Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Shortly afterwards the following companies were also absorbed; Ainsworth & Sons Ltd, Dunbar McMaster & Co Ltd, Crawford Bros Ltd, F W Hayes & Co Ltd, Robert Stewart & Sons Ltd, The American Net & Twine Co and The Boston Net & Twine Co. In around 1928 the company acquired the thread manufacturing interests of Lindsay, Thompson & Co Ltd, Belfast, Northern Ireland. The firm had agents around the world and expanded production into France, Italy, Australia, Brazil and Japan. In the 1960s the firm was renamed Lindustries Ltd .
