Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
John Campbell McKellar trained as an architect with James M Munro before starting his own practice at West George Street, Glasgow, Scotland, in 1883 . From 1884, he also acted as a building factor and, in 1888 , he started building speculatively in the Glasgow suburbs of Crossmyloof, Kelvindale and Maryhill. In 1894 , he formed a short-lived partnership with the house factor, John McKellar, which was known as McKellar & McKellar. In 1896 , he was the principal force in the creation of the firm, John C McKellar & Co Ltd, which was established with a capital of £40,000. John Campbell McKellar was the main shareholder in the new company and held the position of managing director. His fellow directors were William Pettigrew, William Hood, Robert Crawford and Alexander Frew. The company built and managed property. Between 1900 and 1906 the firm built around 90 tenements. From 1967 , the company was run by its liquidators, Greenhill & Co, Glasgow. In 2002 , the company was known as John C McKeller Ltd and remained in liquidation.
