Administrative, family and property records 1684-1907, financial records 1807-1852.
Family records include sasines, deeds, marriage contracts, inventories and receipted bills for repairs to property, supplies of grain, foodstuffs and ironmongery, servant wages, taxes etc.
Founded in 1804 by John Pollok, Allan Gilmour, James Gilmour, Alexander Russell, and Arthur Pollok, the firm of Pollok, Gilmour & Co was established to trade in Scandinavian timber. The firm set up branches between 1842 and 1854 in Canada at St John (Robert Rankin & Co) and Miramichi (Gilmour Rankin & Co), New Brunswick, Bathurst, Chaleur Bay (Ferguson Rankin & Co), Montreal (Gilmour & Co) and Quebec (Allan Gilmour & Co); America at New Orleans (Houghton Rankin & Co); and England at Liverpool (Rankin Gilmour & Co). The firm acquired extensive forestlands and was soon operating saw-mills on a large scale. Shipowning became an important feature of the business, the firm eventually owning a very large tonnage.
