Administrative / Biographical History

Whitbread & Co Ltd of London, founded in 1742  , had been shipping significant quantities of beer to Scotland from their English breweries since the beginning of the 20th century. The company acquired a significant minority shareholding in Archibald Campbell, Hope & King , brewers in Edinburgh, in 1964, and acquired the company and its thirty-six pubs in 1967  . The following year, Whitbread acquired the brewer, John Young Ltd of Musselburgh, and its subsidiary, Olympic Bars Ltd . The Scottish pubs were sold to Watney Mann Ltd . John Young's Brewery was closed in 1968  , and the Argyle Brewery acquired with Archibald Campbell Hope & King was closed in 1971  . In 1975  Whitbread acquired Long John International Ltd , a spirits company which owned Scotch whisky brands such as Laphroaig and Long John. The business was sold to Allied Domecq in 1991  . Whitbread sold its brewing interests to Interbrew in 2000  .
