Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Alexander, Fergusson & Co was established as a partnership between Henry Alexander and Alexander Andrew Fergusson, in c1854 in Glasgow, Scotland. The company initially carried on a business smelting lead ore and manufacturing lead sheet and pipe. The partnership was expanded under new contracts of co-partnery to include three employees as well as the founding partners in 1882 . At this time, the company was trading as Alexander, Fergusson & Co, lead and colour manufacturers and metal merchants. Much of the lead business was carried out at their premises in McAlpine Street, Glasgow, while the lead and paint business was carried out at their premises in Ruchill Street, Maryhill, Glasgow. The firm was incorporated in 1897 and thereafter traded as Alexander, Fergusson & Co Ltd . The company appears to have moved its registered office from McAlpine Street, Glasgow, to Ruchill Street, Glasgow, in c1906.
Alexander, Fergusson & Co Ltd operated through a number of agencies within the UK and also overseas from c1908. Prior to the 1939-1945 World War, the company acquired the Clyde Lead Works in Kinning Park, Glasgow, which primarily carried out work in lead refining and rolling. In 2002 , Alexander, Fergusson and Co Ltd was dormant although still registered in Glasgow.
