Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Cumberland Coal Co Ltd, Whitehaven, Cumbria, England, went into liquidation in 1933 . The company's Haig and Williiam collieries were then run by Priestman Whitehaven Collieries Ltd between 1935 and 1937 but the company failed to run the mines economically. The Coltness Iron Co Ltd , coal and iron masters, Newmains, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, acquired the company in 1937 when the Nuffield Trustees for the Special Areas Reconstruction Association were actively trying to find a new purchaser. The new company, Cumberland Coal Co (Whitehaven) Ltd , was incorporated in 1937 with a capital issue of £290,250 in £1 shares and with a loan from the Special Areas Reconstruction Association. The company realised that the previous failures of the pits had been due to its poor ventilation, bad working methods, and lack of proper transport to remove the coal from the colliery site. A development scheme due for completion in 1947 was put into place. The company however was nationalised as part of the National Coal Board in 1947, under the terms of the Coal Industry Nationalisation Act 1946, and the scheme not completed. After nationalisation, the company retained some assets not transferred to the National Coal Board but itappears to have been wound-up c1954 .
