Administrative / Biographical History
The British Sugar Machinery Manufacturers Association was founded in 1953 . The operations of the Association covered the manufacture and supply of all the machinery, equipment and accessories for use in sugar factories, refineries, and distilleries. According to its constitution the objectives of the Association were to promote and safeguard the interests of its members, and to form a liaison between Government Departments and the sugar industry. The members in 1953 were: Blairs Ltd , Glasgow, Scotland; Thomas Broadbent & Sons Ltd , Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England; A F Craig & Co Ltd , Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland; Fawcett, Preston & Co Ltd , Bromborough, Birkenhead, England; George Fletcher & Co Ltd , Derby, England; John McNeil & Co Ltd , Glasgow; The Mirrlees Watson Co Ltd , Glasgow; Pott, Cassels & Williamson , Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland; A & W Smith & Co Ltd , Glasgow; Duncan Stewart & Co Ltd , Glasgow; and Watson, Laidlaw & Co Ltd , Glasgow. The Association was based at St Vincent Street, Glasgow, and Mann Judd Gordon & Co , chartered accountants, Glasgow, were its secretaries. The Association suspended its activities in March 1968 , and after this date Thomas Broadbent & Sons Ltd , Huddersfield, handled all enquiries regarding the Association.
