Administrative / Biographical History
Inchgreen Engineering Co Ltd was incorporated in 1973 following the merger of Lithgows Ltd , shipbuilders and repairers, Greenock, Inverclyde, and Scotts' Shipbuilding and Engineering Co Ltd , Greenock, in 1970. Scott Lithgow (Offshore) Ltd was formed in 1976 by a change of name from
In 1976 Scott Lithgow Ltd , eager to break into the offshore industry, formed an alliance with an American company, Deep Oil Technology Incorporated . That company had spent years developing the tension leg platform system, providing oil companies with the means to exploit deep water oil reserves. They lacked construction experience but sought to remedy this through Scott Lithgow Ltd . In 1976, an agreement was reached to set-up Scott Lithgow (Offshore) Ltd to market tension leg platform systems. In return for design technology information, Scott Lithgow Ltd agreed to bear the operating costs of the new company's marketing development strategy. The dormant Inchgreen Engineering Co Ltd became the vehicle for this new venture and changed its name to Scott Lithgow (Offshore) Ltd.
In 1977, the company was nationalised as part of Scott Lithgow Group within British Shipbuilders. In 1982, subject to British Shipbuilders re-organisation programme, its assets were transferred to Scott Lithgow Ltd to become part of British Shipbuilders Offshore Division. The company was dissolved in 1984.
