Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons (Midlands) Ltd , civil engineers, London, England, was incorporated as a limited liability company by the family partnership of Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons , civil engineers, London, England, in 1930 . The company was established to take control of the parent companies civil engineering contract work in the centre of England in a similar way as Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons (London) Ltd was already doing in the south of England. By incorporating the subsidiary company, the parent company was at less of a financial risk should a contract fail. The company's first chairman was Alfred McAlpine, Sir Robert's fourth son, who managed the parent company's interests in the Midlands and Wales with offices in Liverpool and Manchester.
The Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee refused to allow Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons (Midlands) Ltd control of the £1.5 million Birkenhead section of the Mersey Tunnel that was instead managed by the parent company between 1929 and 1935. However, contracts were received by the company for sections of the Manchester Ship canal and others in the north-west of England.
In 1984 , the company was renamed as Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons (Yorkshire) Ltd , changing again in 1992 to Sir Robert McAlpine (Yorkshire) Ltd . The company was dissolved in 1998 .
