Administrative / Biographical History
John Cochrane & Co (Barrhead) Ltd appears to have been established around 1864, when it first appears in the Glasgow Post Office Directory . The company specialised in boiler making and pump manufacture and by the 1870 had their main works at the Grahamstone Works, Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, Scotland. The company supplied their products to a world-wide market with their products winning awards at the Melbourne Exhibition, Austrailia in 1880, the Calcutta Exhibition, India, in 1884, and the Edinburgh Exhibition of 1886.
In 1930, the goodwill of John Cochrane & Co (Barrhead) Ltd wa purchased for GBP 700 by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co Ltd , locomotive manufacturers and engineers, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland. Cochrane's continue to trade as a company in its own right until the mid 1970s.
