Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In 1922 Dr Alex Henrie, manager of the Waverley Cinema at Shawlands Cross, Glasgow started a business known as Rex Publicity Services which saw the start of the Rex Stewart Group Ltd . This business initially publicised films through posters, newspaper advertising and articles and house film magazines, but later became a general advertising agency. After the Second World War, George Stewart, who had originally joined the firm as a messenger and later changed his name by deed poll to George Rex Stewart, became its managing director. The firm continued to expand, mainly through mergers, until in the 1980s it was one of the largest advertising agencies in Europe with a staff of around 500. At about the same time, George Rex Stewart, who was now the firm??s chairman, set up an international network of advertising agencies known as IMAA (International Markets Advertising Agency) to allow large multinational companies to deal with one agency world wide. In 1989 the firm merged with Lopex (London Post Exchange) and a new company was subsequently formed, known as The Bridge Alliance and the Rex Stewart Group ceased to exist.
