Document sent to Dickinson from the Ministry of Labour, with suggestions for a short film that would demonstrate the value of all contributions to the war effort, including manual labour in the construction of weapons. The message of the film would be to boost the morale of the workers making equipment – showing them the effects a ‘weak link in the chain’ can have on the soldier in battle. On the verso Dickinson has written ‘Jean Compton’ and ‘Jeanne MacIntyre’, possibly considering them for the film.
Dickinson directed or supervised numerous short propaganda films during the earlier years of the Second World War. The films were made according to directives sent from the Ministry of Labour or Information, in order to get various messages across, such as boosting morale, encouraging recruitment, informing the public that their enemies might be listening, or even reminding officers about their responsibilities as leaders.
