Stanley Kubrick
Two HALs
HAL
Dave, I don't understand why you have to do this to me. I know I've done some bad things, but I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.
OTHER HAL
Dave, I wouldn't pay any attention to Hal. You're doing the right thing, Hal must be disconnected. He's become dangerously unreliable.
BOWMAN
Who are you?
OTHER HAL
I'm Hal's friend.
Portion of draft script for 2001: A Space Odyssey with two HALs. Link: 2001: A Space Odyssey (IMDB website).
Scripts are not a static document, they undergo changes and the Stanley Kubrick Archive reflects the stages involved in script development. For 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Archive not only has scripts with cut or revised scenes such as the use of two HAL computers (the one in the final cut and one to explain why HAL 1 is doing what he is doing) but also an early script with one of the other titles suggested for the film 'Journey Beyond the Stars'. The collection includes; scripts; artworks; special effect records; and letters for example, from Arthur C Clarke.
