James McNeill Whistler
Self-portrait
Self-Portrait, circa 1896. Oil on canvas; 51.5 x 31.3cm.
This work, and another "Self-Portrait" in the Hunterian collection, appears to have been a preliminary study for "Gold and Brown" 1898, in the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., USA. The distortion caused by the artist's monocle, which he habitually wore in his right eye, has been exploited to create a peculiarly manic stare.
