This month we celebrate the Archives Hub and Copac
What are they and why should I use them?
The Archives Hub and Copac are trusted online resources which help researchers save time when they are searching for primary and secondary source materials to support their study.
Archives Hub
https://archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk
With thousands of descriptions from over 180 UK archives, the Archives Hub is an ideal starting-point for any kind of research. It provides an easy way to search many of the UK’s rich and varied archive holdings.
Archives are collections of unique primary source material and may include specific information which cannot be found anywhere else. These resources can be of great value, adding depth and evidence, and giving researchers the chance to further their research by making new connections and uncovering new facts.
Copac
Researchers will need access to more books and materials than their local library holds. Searching Copac’s extensive database of UK library holdings allows relevant items to be located quickly and easily.
Copac brings together the catalogues of nearly 60 major UK research libraries: national, academic, and specialist. Between them, these libraries contribute nearly 38 million records that go to make up the Copac database. With material dating from the early middle-ages to the present day, and in hundreds of languages, you can be sure that Copac will help you find material that’s relevant to your research.
In the New Year…
From January 2011 our monthly features will celebrate the collections that are found in both the Archives Hub and Copac services. We feel that showing the treasures of both services will be of great benefit to researchers and their research.
As the Archives Hub and Copac teams are located in the same office and work closely together this feels like a logical next step in the future development of both services.
We have picked out just four research topics to show you the way that resources from the two services can complement each other:
