Trees
Tree Foundation
Solly Zuckerman (1904-1993) became a trustee of the Tree Foundation in 1978. The Foundation was established to raise funds to support the work of the Tree Council. These two documents from the Zuckerman Archive are illustrative of both the Foundation's and Zuckerman's fund-raising efforts. The Tree Foundation was wound up in 1984.
The A4 poster from file GB 1187 SZ/TF/8 was produced for a campaign targetted at young people. The letter (GB 1187 SZ/TF/6/5/1) to Jack Heinz of the giant Pittsburgh food corporation, is typical of Zuckerman the fund-raiser.

Trees are living reservoirs, storing gallons of water in their leaves and branches.
Leaves are living solar panels... converting sunlight into energy.
Leaves are living air cleansers... converting carbon dioxide into oxygen.
Behind [trees] are the noises & smells & ugly cars & buildings & grime of the city... trees are the curtains of the countryside.
[Squirrel]: Nuts!
[Someone enjoying a swing]: And after this we can play hide-and-seek ... & conkers... and tree houses... Tarzan!
[Butterfly]: Me Jane...
Leafytop Apartments: Top Floor: birds, insects; Mid Floor: woodpecker, squirrel; Ground Floor: fungi, mice; Basement: worms (ugh).
Secretly underground roots are sucking up water & nourishment & holding the soil together some of them are even manufacturing natural fertilisers for friends.

[Worms]: Heard about the Amazon desert? You mean the Amazon
