The first Edinburgh International Festival took place in 1947: "The Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama in association with the Arts Council of Great Britain, The British Council and the Corporation of the City of Edinburgh presents The Old Vic Trust Limited and the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre Limited in a special adaptation of the eighteenth-century ballad opera The Highland Fair. 18-30 August 1952".

The first Edinburgh Festival Fringe took place the next year. Wildcat Stage Productions was formed in 1978 and opened the Wildcat Theatre Complex in Edinburgh in 1980.
