Collection/Component level

Generally used at collection level, to refer to the whole collection, but may be used at any level

Tips/Recommendations

  • Chose the current English version of the place name, and qualify by country (and by county if necessary)

  • NCA Rules do not specify using the current English version of a place name, partly because cross-references can provide for this. However, the Hub requires use of the current English version of the place for consistency. Other versions may be included within the description.

  • Remember that a place name should be encoded as a <corpname> when it refers to a jurisdiction, for example 'Great Britain -- Parliament' (the country is effectively the corporate body).

EAD Editor

  • Enter only the main term in the 'Place Name' field. This might be, for example, London (England) following AACR2, or London following NCA Rules (with a separate entry for 'England')

  • The drop-down menu provides for adding subdivisions: location, date(s) and other.

  • You will need to specify the rules used or the source of the place name in order to add it to the record

Manual Encoding

  • Each separate geographic name is within a <geogname> tag. For the Hub, the separate parts of the entry are marked-up as subdivions using the attribute <emph altrender="">

  • These attributes are loosely based on MARC: altrender="a" for the main entry, altrender="y" for chronological subdivisions, altrender="z" for geographical subdivisions, altrender="x" for topical or general subdivisions.
