Sir Henry James Sumner Maine 1822 - 1888

Sir Henry Sumner Maine was educated at Christ's Hospital, London and PembrokeCollege, Cambridge. He became a junior tutor at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, 1845- 1847 and Regius Professor of Civil Law 1847 - 1854. In 1850 he was calledto the bar and became a reader in Roman law and jurisprudence at the Inns ofCourt, 1852. He contributed to the Saturday Review from its establishmentin 1855. He was a legal member of the council of India, 1862 - 1869 and wasappointed to a seat on the Indian Council in 1871. In the same year he wasappointed as a Knight Commander of the Star of India.

In 1869 he moved to Oxford to become Corpus Professor of Jurisprudence until1877 when he moved back to Cambridge to become master of Trinity Hall untilhis death in 1888. In 1887 he was made Whewell Professor of InternationalLaw at Cambridge. He was one of the earliest to apply the historical methodto the study of political institutions.
